Haven’t posted here in a while and am not sure what this blog’s function is anymore. Perhaps just a depository for my thoughts—what blogs were meant to be in the first place.
Just finished my midterms for public health today and am going to Rome tomorrow for four days, provided that the French strikes don’t get in the way. I’m about half-packed, but it only takes about fifteen minutes to throw my clothes, electronics and toiletries in a backpack. I’m not sure how people ever pack days in advance—you’re packing all the things you’re going to wear and use anyway!
Also, today, I:
-watched Memento for the first time and it was not what I thought it would be (for some reason I mentally prepared myself for the Life of Pi). But it was great, and should be watched again to really understand the middle section of the movie.
-had a dinner of lentil soup, goat cheese, cucumbers and crackers. Awesome.
-tried Cheeseburger flavored Lays. Also awesome, but in a different way. They taste just like a McDonald’s cheeseburger, so mainly like pickles, mustard, and burnt meat.
-Listened to the single, Impossible Soul, at least four times. My favorite part comes on at 13:49, and I have to admit there are some parts of the song I actually don’t like. But the album overall is great and I love Vesuvius and All for Myself.
-Discovered Jeremy Messersmith, who reminds me of Elliot Smith.
I’m also re-reading The Unbearable Lightness of Being, and am still trying to figure out the narrator dimension of the novel, but really enjoy it. It reminds me of a braided essay in some parts, but it’s fiction…yet written in the authoritative first person that makes it seem like nonfiction.
Lastly, I want to recommend this poem by Dana Isokawa that I stumbled upon in Literary Laundry, a Stanford literary magazine:
